VGT Continues its Efforts to Foster Child Protection

The Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT) chaired by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will convene an official meeting in the Colombian city of Cartagena during 4-7 April 2016. The meeting will discuss ways to fostering the VGT’s role in combating child sexual abuse crimes.

This marks the first VGT Board of Management meeting in 2016, and the first meeting since the UAE assumed the presidency of the VGT Secretariat through to 2018.

Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Chair of the VGT, explained that the meeting will discuss topics related to the mechanisms of enhancing child protection efforts, cooperating in the fight against online child sexual abuse crimes, and discuss the added value members can bring in this regard.

The meeting will also review the policy of joining the VGT by international police authorities and private companies in order to empower its international role. Major General Al Nuaimi noted that a full day would be dedicated to private sector members of the VGT, where presentations will be made on the importance of joining the VGT and the value they add in the fight against online child sexual abuse. In addition, the day’s activities will discuss challenges and ways to overcome possible obstacles when working with law enforcement, taking into consideration that some of these private companies are technically specialized in software and combating hacking.

The meeting will also witness the signing ceremony of Philippines as a new law enforcement member in the VGT.

The VGT chair regards the joining of private companies as a significant value within the objectives of the VGT that include building efficient partnerships with private sector companies in the field of online childprotection against sexual exploitation. He explained that the mechanism of joining the VGT by any international police authority or private company is subject to strict procedures and criteria, as it measures the efficiency and benefit of memberships in the fight against online child sexual exploitation.

He stressed that the joining of private institutions and companies that enjoy a long history of involvement with the Internet, will play a major role in mitigating the increasing harms of the dark side of the Internet. Private institutions and companies will be obliged to take action and communicate with law enforcement agencies to enhance the efforts of creating a safer cyber space, and making the world a better place.

“Through its presidency of the VGT, the UAE is continuing its efforts to enhance and protect children. It seeks to ensure the joining of the largest possible number of law enforcement agencies to the VGT to enable it continue its successful role in law enforcement; enhance innovative actions and programs; and encourage the focus of the world, public opinion, and awareness institutions in order to encourage further efforts in protecting the children from any violations. This will lead to focusing all collective efforts on children and their protection,” noted Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi.

It is worth noting that the VGT was established in 2003 to combat online child abuse. It aims to disassemble child sexual exploitation networks on the Internet, coordinate secret investigations about cybercrimes, and exchange and develop intelligence information.
